The Sensational Child offers an array of services, within one multi-faceted center, to improve the
quality of life for children with disabilities and their families.
The Sensational Child is a source for therapy tools and equipment, books devoted to special needs,
quality developmental toys, items used in sensory integration therapy, as well as adaptive equipment for
better organizational, daily living and life skills.
A recreation room will provide an enveloping sensory experience, where both structured learning and
leisure activities can take place, and children, both with disabilities and their typical peers, can meet
on an equal footing in a uniquely stimulating environment. Space will also be provided for families and
therapists to work together in a comfortable setting alternative to home or school.
Additionally, the aim of The Sensational Child is to engage people with disabilities and their families
with their community, to give people with disabilities greater visibility, and to be a launch pad for
positive outreach. Better public understanding and the creation of family support systems will occur
through parent-to-parent group meetings, enrichment programs, educational opportunities, speaker nights,
book clubs and art instruction. As well, the center will provide vital work experience and social
interaction for young people with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.
Ultimately, the aim of The Sensational Child is to facilitate the search for information
and support that many parents begin when their child is diagnosed with a disabling condition.
Some of these parents may be overwhelmed by the breadth of information, or have disabilities of
their own, and the aim of The Sensational Child is to ensure a welcoming atmosphere, free from intimidation, where the complex world of disability can be navigated, and support found, by interacting with people who have been on a similar quest for the right information, the best therapy, the better understanding. It is also the aim of The Sensational Child to educate and empower parents who have children that are at risk for out-of-home placement, by providing services and information that are particular to each child’s individual needs.
By being a hub of activity and discovery, The Sensational Child will offer families a well-rounded
experience in the search for understanding, and will provide the educational, social, emotional,
literary and sensory support not available at any current operation in Rhode Island.
